the "free" 6 inch "stoupon"

So... Im perusing the Blizzard internal employee coupons and discounts page today and I find a coupon for a free 6" combo (when you buy one for 8.99) from the new subway down the street. I passed it around to a couple of people at the office, and we all agreed... this is a sweet deal! So Angela and I decide to go because its basically a meal for 2 people for 8.99. Thats 4 cookies btw, and subway cookies are my weakness. (Only 2nd to sun cakes from 85 degrees.)
Anyway so we get there and she orders a 6 inch, and I ordered a footlong, thinking ill just pay like 50 cents difference. We get the the register, I hand him THE coupon, and the guy... swear to god... he rings it up and its 13.50. And Im like "whoa whoa whoaaaa turbo. Pump the brakes, cuz I got a coupon that says this should cost 9 bucks, and maybe 50 cents cuz of the footlong". He tells me that my" footlong counts as the 2 six inchers", and then angelas "6 incher is full price". This KINDA makes sense... but not really, and theres a line stacking up behind us, so Im like... fine. I saved 1 dollar, what the fuck ever. lame coupon. Then I walk away, forgetting to pay the man, still trying to figure out his "Thought trap" involving a footlong being charged as 2 6 inchers, im thinking "maybe i didnt read the fine print".
And HE says "sir, arent you going to pay"? So I pop out 15 bucks and hand it to him. some coins roll out and he closes the register, and I walk away.
As we're eating, I notice a flyer that came with the meal that has the EXACT COUPON that I thought was so exclusive from blizzard (except it doesnt say blizzard employees only) , AND i realize... he never actually gave me my change! So essentially I payed 14.50 for something that should have only cost 9.50! WTF man!? BEYOND that... theres a coupon right next to it for a footlong for 5 dollars!!!!!!
Fuck that subway.
Next time I go in there, im just going to walk up the the counter and say "I would NEVER eat here!" and then spin my finger around at everyone in line.
I miss the quiznos they kicked out of that spot.

more Creed omnibus progress!

A few people were wondering what some of my problems with CreeD Utopiate were, and so I thought id show a little bit of the progress Ive been making on cleaning this one up. Im not a pro letterer, so I still dont feel like its up to snuff, but I think its better. probably my biggest problem with the book is that I just wasnt very confident with my colors. Its like looking back on a period of time when you were really trying to push yourself to learn something new. Ive learned a LOT about color and creating depth in my painted works since then. Utopiate was I think the book that I painted right after doing THOR.

If youre not on my facebook, you probably havent seen this...

Just FYI, Ive been posting progress pieces for this regularly on my facebook too. Friend me there if you havent already!
Its finally finished, and I realized I have a lot to learn about traditional painting! But thats a great thing. Perhaps Ill catalog my notes as I learn so that others can join me on this adventure into an area before the digital.

Omnichronos update! The CreeD collected omnibus reaching over 500 pages!!!???

Ive added about 20 pages to the "scraps and notes" section of the CreeD Omnibus. Above you can find samples of the kind of behind the scenes materials that Ill be adding. The final book will have a LOT of these. It turns out that I WILL be adding the Cyberfrog/CreeD crossover. I read a review that referred to it as "the crossover that NOBODY demanded"... but fuck 'em. Im reprinting it ANYWAY! Primarily because the book was actually really damn good, but also because I want this thing to be complete. Which brings me to Utopiate... the image series that nobody demanded. lol. Im going to re-read it again tonight and see what I can see. Maybe for the sake of satisfying those who demand a complete collection... itll still make it. Perhaps with a disclaimer, and notes on what I might have done differently.
[edit]
I read through Utopiate last night and found a great deal of value in it afterall. I think that my memory of developing the book was really negative, and that evokes some reluctance from me about reprinting it. But after taking another look, I realized that I can fix some of the problems I had with the artwork in remastering it, and rework the lettering (which really needs it btw). So, yes, that will push the collection up to about 550 pages so far.

1st week original art auction from CreeD

Click on the image to go to the auction.

Id like to try auctioning off old original artwork from Creed and my other projects every week. For our first item, you can buy this classic CreeD original from the series "Appletree". For each piece of artwork that is sold, you can rest assured that it is an investment, and my heart and soul are in these pieces. If you simply would like to support the books that I make, or would like to encourage me to do more, please think of this as a donation that will encourage me to produce more books.

MORE New Project Preview

Because you demanded it! This is a scene from my new graphic novel (maybe series?). Im hoping to have an official announcement soon. Im REALLY enjoying drawing this kind of stuff. Its the kind of book that transitions through multiple styles of art. The main focus is much more on telling the story of an epic journey for this one. Creed was very whimsical and almost poetic, with much more focus on characters and dreamy dialogue. This book is much more of a cohesive, linear, plot driven story, within a really fantastical world. It will be violent, it will be beautiful, and I hope to get it rolling as an "official" project soon.

EAT IT Mario!!!

Ive always had a love for 2d side scrollers! My fondest memories of my childhood were sneaking into my presents every night before Christmas and playing with my Nintendo, then sealing it up so that nobody could tell Id already mastered all of the warp paths in Mario.
Its no secret that Ive always wanted to make a sidescroller, so Im making some sprites for a Nova Colony game.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles rights

I really want to include the TMNT/CreeD crossover into the CreeD omnibus, but I just found out that nickalodeon has purchased all ownership of the characters for TMNT. Im pretty sure that Mirage would have let me do it, theyve always been really cool to talk to, and work with. But my dealings with Nickalodeon are really limited. Outside of hanging out with a few animators, and licensing an option to them for a show, I dont know anyone over there. I really dont think theyre going to let me print this book.
I dont know. Heres to hoping that my habit of falling ass backwards into good fortune hasnt run out!

New CreeD omnibus update! ITS HUUUUUGEE!!!

The remastering of the mini series "imaginary" has been added to the omnibus at www.creedcomic.com.
To show what kind of enhancements were made, I present 3 pages from the book.

I re-lettered the entire book (Erik Larsen said "the lettering sucked"), so it looks way better now. Although Im not a pro, and some pro letterers will likely cringe. The pages were drawn to be printed in a 5x7. I dont know why. I always liked that size for a book. But here Ive resized it to fit traditional formats.
There are also 2 pages that were previously unreleased in this version. Im thinking of this omnibus as a work in progress, so these 2 new pages will be colored accordingly when I have time. I cut appletree, and I cut utopiate. Thats about 90 pages of creed. Why would I do that? well for 2 reasons.
In the case of the Appletree book, I cut it up and used parts to complete the Imaginary story. So there are about 6 pages that were unused in the final. Imaginary after all was really just a more complete version of the appletree story. Utopiate was... well, Im not sure what Im going to do with that. I would rather assume that I never did those books. But there were scenes that might be worth salvaging. Maybe at the very least, Ill cut it up and rewrite it as a shorter story.
Let me know what you guys think of the rework of Imaginary!

I want to work on games like this.

I know I know. R0ight? Why would the guy doing concepts for friggin DIABLO want to do cute fantasy games? Maybe there's something wrong with me, or maybe its because Im an artist. It just looks like so much fun! its super stylized, easy to read shapes, relaxed color palette. It looks like its got a nice artists touch, without compromising classic rpg gameplay. Something like this would be really cool for a CreeD DS game.

Trading card art for World of Warcraft TCG

This was a trading card for Upperdecks world of warcraft TCG. Ive also included the sketches. When approaching an illustration such as this, I generally do about 2-4 rough sketches before going to color. The last image is the final. In hindsight, the warm colors pull too much attention, so I probably would have kept the foreground less saturated and put more of the color contrast on the cats face. I think I did this card in late 2007, and I think Ive gotten better since then. I really enjoy doing these trading cards. To date Ive done over 27 cards for the series. Ill be posting some more of them in the future, but with my graphic novel projects I tend to keep myself busy with my own graphic novels such as Nova Colony and CreeD, and something new that I cant talk about yet.

Christmas vacation = no posts for at least 5 days. PLUS Omnibus update!

So I leave you with this:
When CreeD went to Avatar press, they wanted to do a variant cover for each book, then reprint the whole thing with more variants. I dont know how they are now, but I never even saw this one go to print. If it exists, they didnt give me copies or even let me know about it. They did this with "leather editions", "foil editions"... I dont even know how many Creed Variant covers there are. I still like the piece, but that kind of stuff broke my heart. At least I finally get to collect it all together! Speaking of which...

Come back next week and Ill post some more old CreeD stuff! Also, Ive got a BIG BIG update for the CreeD omnibus prepared! Ill be posting nearly the entire Lightning comics run. Thats 8 issues all at once! Look forward to it in the first week of January, or maybe earlier!

1st Jeff Lawter inks and Ghost Rider interview

This image documents the very first inks by long time CreeD inker Jeff Lawter. I met Jeff at Elkhart comic con, and we quickly realized that we work well together. This was the test piece that he did over my pencils. The Piece was never officially used as a cover, but I still feel like it was one of the most iconic creed images.
I did an interview for a Ghost Rider fan site. Check it out!

The Maxx and CreeD convention sketch

In 2000, I took a LOT of commissions and went to a LOT of conventions. This was right after I left Jnco, and right before I did a 6 issue run on Ghost Rider. I cant remember who this was for, but I kept a photocopy of it just in case I ever put together a huge sketchbook. So Ill be adding this one to the Omnibus for sure.

Frenzy

Before CreeD was Mark Farley, jumping around kicking skeezik ass in the dreamworld, I did a comic strip for my high school newspaper. I was 16 when I drew these, but something remained constant, and carried over from these strips into CreeD. It was crude, and childish. It was very "stream of consciousness" and it was offensive to some people at the time, but it got a reaction!
I only did 4 of them. The story about Sparky is true! Okay, only some of it.

New site updates, new contents!

Ive redirected Trentkaniuga.com, and Creedcomic.com straight to this spot in an effort to consolidate my websites. I've also decided to just post entire issues of CreeD to this place about once a month! Both sites will bring you here, where you can view my gallery of current works, and entire issues of the classic hit series, CREED from the 90's. You'll notice over on the right, there are some new buttons, please go there! You might be thinking "but Trent, I cant look at this, its too awesome to be free! Thats like stealing!" It's okay... it's there for you to share with people!

You'll also notice that I'm going to be updating this blog A LOT more frequently with old sketches, including the very first CreeD drawings. Pieces like this very first drawing ever of CreeD:
I was 14 when I drew this, and its not very good but... this was the image that inspired the whole series. Back then, he was going to be called "symbiote", and he had a more superhero kind of suit that came from space and fed on his anger. But then I decided that was too much like Venom from Spiderman, so I changed it. And so because I really dont like to only post images from when I could barely hold a pencil, heres one that I did a few years later thats much better.

Please check back frequently, because I found a WHOLE crate of these old drawings that I want to share with you. By Crate, I mean hundreds of sketches and unused covers with some great stories behind them.

Starcraft comic cover finished.

When Im not roaming aimlessly with Angela, listening to 99 luft balloons on repeat with the top down on the TT, I like to stare at the same painting for 15 hours. Sometimes I finish something neat... and then I think its not finished and then I tell myself 15 hours for something that will never get used for anything is too long... and I tell myself its finished again.

Starcraft painting, work in progress

Just thought Id post some of the progress on the painting Im currently working on in my free time. Ill try to post updates as I progress. Its pretty close to finished, but still needs some work. For one, Im trying to keep it dark, but I think it needs more highlight behind the zerg to get a better overall read. I dont know what Ill do with it yet. Nothing a bottle of Philips Union , and a free evening cant fix.

Final Fight Streetwise cutscene storyboards

I recently began organizing all of my old artwork by year. In that process of digging through countless hard drives and folders and duplicate files, sometimes I find a little nugget of something cool that was believed to be previously lost. For fans of the Final Fight Streetwise video game on the ps2 and xbox, here are a few of the storyboards for the cutscenes. I did all of the storyboards and sometimes made animatics for cutscenes before they went to Eiko to be roughed out in animation, and then passed on to an external studio for final animation.
If you played the game, you should recognize these shots and scenes. There were over an hour of cutscenes, this is only from 4 of the scenes.

I dont know where this guy came from, but he did a great little run down of the correct order of CreeD books.
